Great question Shirley, and in my opinion there is no easy answer.
I have heard from God in a number of ways myself, yet if I told you about them, it would seem weird unless you also experienced the same thing. As humans, we tend to only believe that which we have personally experienced or seen.
Almost every time that I have heard God it has been through the spirit. How does that work? I’m not sure. I started hearing God some 7 years ago. I say this meaning that these experiences are after I was finally told what they were. In other words, if God spoke to me before this 7 year period I had no conscience knowledge of it.
I suspected that I was being guided by God in the beginning of the 7 year period, yet some 3 years into it I was shown by the spirit that I was indeed hearing from God. It came about for me when I was camping and fasting in the Bad Lands of South Dakota. I had been led to travel 12 hours to this spot and fast. My fasting was of solid food as I did drink coffee in the morning and water through the day.
In the fourth day I took a hike up one of the hills in the area. I almost passed out because of the lack of nutrition (I’m guessing) and finally returned to camp. I once again started reading scripture in the early evening as I had been doing. As I came upon 1 Corinthians chapter 2, all of a sudden I started to understand the scripture clearly, I knew exactly what the passages meant within this chapter and in chapter 3. I was so blown away by this that I stopped reading and just sat there in amazement.
You see, about a month before that I was studying with a church group, a small group that would study after church in their house. I had been getting small discernments within my mind which had led me to look differently at scripture. At the time I didn’t know if it was just my mind speaking to me or something else, but I just went with it. After accumulating strong evidence concerning one of the churches doctrines I presented this evidence to this study group to explore. Mind you that I was not trying to convince them of anything, all I wanted to do was study the material to see if it made any sense, to see it there was any truth in it.
The next week I showed up at their (a couple) house and asked about the material that I had left for them to study. I was at least a weeks worth of reading including a book. Yet when I questioned them they blasted me out of the water with allegations and questions about the craziness of the subject. I knew that they did not read any of the material because the questions that they asked me proved it to me, the info was all there. I left.
Later that night I was sitting in my chair at home and I asked the Father (Prayed) “Why, Why will they not listen to me?” Out of no-where I got an answer in my head, it was like it was just planted within me. The answer that I got was “Because there is a building in the way” “A building”, I thought. “Yes” was the answer, “The church building, they love their church more than they love me.” Then I heard the following “You see, you pray to me (God), and I answer back via the spirit. But if there is a church in the way, then the church blocks me from speaking to my people. For if I tell them something, they then question it by asking their church leaders, and because the church leaders do not know the truth, they deny what it is I am trying to say.”
Wow, can you imagine that? I was flabbergasted. I just sat there in disbelief thinking on this. Shirley, this is when I learned not to trust in the church system. I’m not saying that you must follow me, but just understand that this is when I stopped believing in them. It took another two years of study before I found all of the evidence against the church system within scripture. But if you do not know that it is there, then you will never find it, or discover it.
So it was with this experience that I went to fast in the Bad Lands. I needed proof that I was indeed hearing God, for I could not question this couple that I had been studying with unless it was proved to me that I was indeed hearing God’s voice.
So, to answer your question. We all hear God in various different ways, I myself have heard from God in different ways. The problem that I had was to know if I was hearing from God or hearing my own mind. I prayed for an answer.
This is when I was introduced to a man who taught me about the law of the double or triple witness. God’s law states that by two or three witnesses is a matter established. This law if found in Deuteronomy 19:15.
Here is how this law works. If you think that you have heard from God, either by discernment, or maybe by hearing through another person, or whatever the case may be. If you are not sure that it is from God, then ask God for a double witness. If you get the double witness, then you know that it is from God.
If you think that you heard God tell you about how to interpret scripture in a certain way, and you have trouble believing in it, ask for a second witness to the interpretation. When God taught me the identity of Satan, I told God right away that I would need at least three witnesses to this truth, because I was having trouble believing in it. Within two weeks I had three other people come up to me and tell me the same thing that God had told me, thus I had to accept it as truth. As I studied scripture further I started to see within scripture this truth, because now I was looking for it, and I could see it.
You hear God in many ways, the trick is to know if it is really from God, and only through experience do you get good at it. I will tell you that I do not hear God all the time and I am still confused about many things, so take what I tell you at face value. Ask God for a double witness to what I am telling you here.
I have heard God through discernment the most. In my opinion, discernment is when you get an input into your mind. Sometimes we call it an “Ahh Haa” moment, when you suddenly see something, or suddenly understand something, it is kind of like that.
I hope this helps.

In that God is Spirit, and we are His children/offspring, I believe He speaks to us primarily Spirit to spirit.
And in my experience, this is generally experienced as thoughts. He speaks and a thought comes to my mind.
I have also heard of others having heard a voice out loud, but this is a very rare occurence.
He can also speak to us through His Word.
