My guess would be becasue the flood is something that can possibly be proved scientifically.

It is not just the flood, although it might seem like it right now. But events such as the crossing of the red sea, the resurrection of Jesus and a number of other events are heavily contested among the masses.
I think “notafan” is correct in his thoughts, that the main theme is to prove or not to prove. (religion vs athieism) The flood is provable, for there is evidence all over the earth. Yet one must have their eyes opened in order to see it. And the only one who can open their eyes is the Father.
