Great question T4J.
Here is my thoughts on the subject.
I also had the same worries when I started down my own road of discovery in God. I had discovered that we are to keep the law of God, but my church believed that the law of God was done away with. However, any serious study of scripture can only bring one to believe that we must still follow God’s law.
Then I ran across the scripture in Hebrews 7:12 which tells us that because of a change in the priesthood, there is also a change in the law, or to be more specific, a change in the way we follow the law. So what was this change?
It took me a number of years for God to teach me what I am about to share with you.
The nation of Israel, and later the Jews (the two tribes of Judah and Benjamin) were under the Levitical priesthood, and therefore they were under the laws of Moses. These are actually God’s laws but as they were given to us by Moses they came to be known as the laws of Moses.
The Ten Commandments were spoken to us by God directly and many people place more importance on these commandments than the laws given to us by Moses, yet a law is a law no matter what, so all of these laws and commandments are of God.
Jesus first coming changed the priesthood from a Levitical priesthood to a Melchisedec Priesthood. Jesus did not come from the tribe of Levi, but from the tribe of Judah (there is much to say about the difference in the tribes which I will not speak of here), and therefore Jesus comes as a high priest of the Melchisedec order.
Thus, even though the laws of God as given by Moses are still in effect for those who deem it necessary to follow those laws, the law of the Melchisedec order are followed in a different manner than the way the Levitical laws were followed. I will not go into all of the details here but just cut to the chase.
As I have stated so many times, the word “FAITH” means to “Hear the voice of God.” Yes, it also means to trust and to believe, but the main understanding in scripture is to hear God for yourself. Thus Romans 10:17 is not about hearing the word through a pastor, it is about hearing God through His Spirit. “Works” is being obedient to God because of what you hear via His Spirit.
Thus the new law is the “Law of Faith” as spoken of in Roman 3:27. Paul also speaks of this law as the “hearing of faith” in Galatians 3:2, 5. THIS IS THE NEW LAW OF GOD. The new law of God is to hear His voice and do what He says, to become obedient to faith (Acts 6:7).
So, this means that you are to follow the leading of the spirit as best that you can, for this is the new law. If you are led to freely eat pork, then by all means eat it. All things are good if prayed over. We as a people do not hear God very well through the spirit, at least we are not aware of it. But even as you say that you “felt the Holy Spirit” tell you about something, if it comes from the Spirit, IT IS LAW.
Many Blessings
