Great point. I like to listen to sermons during the day while working. On the radio station I listen to has teachings all morning long, 30 minutes each, with different teachers each time. Between listening to different pastors, and to the DJ's teaching from time to time, I've learned that people can come up with some very strange "examples" to make the point.
It's ironic that you mention about "attracting" more people to their church. I say that because one impression I have gotten the last quite a few years is that it appears that churchs has become more of a business than church. But that's just my opinion.

I was getting my coffee ready for work and thinking about this, since I have heard many pastors crack jokes during their sermons. I personally see nothing wrong with it "IF" they are used in severe moderation. Meaning they shouldn't be turning the sermon into a comedy act. God provides comedians for that. The reason I say this by looking at it from a non believer's eyes. Church is known for having the ability to be "boring". I'm sure you know what I'm referring to, or at least I hope. But throwing a moderate joke in there from time to time basically "wakes" people up. For example, if you listen to Dr. Jeffress, every now and then, he would make a funny comment, not so much to stir up laughter, but I see it as to "wake" people up, to keep them interested. He not only does it so rarely, but also "small funny".

They might as well, for they do not tell the truth....
