"I began to pray the rosary."

Question

"I began to pray the rosary."

Can someone explain what this means? I think of the catholic religion when I read this, but not sure, and not sure what it means. This is what James Foley said in one of his letters he wrote prior to being executed.

Praying rosary is praying to Mary, mother of Jesus with that thing in hand- small balls. Its clear that its a bad prayer, but in it there is also prayer- Our father in heaven. I read that Foley's mother said that she knows that her executed son relied on God and on his faith. I believe that if he prayed from his heart the prayer Father in heaven, he was forgiven. In rosary there is a prayer that Jesus is blessed. I hope that if he prayed it from heart that he gave his heart to Jesus and God and is in heaven now. I am still shocked by cruelty of his death.

From what I've read, the Foley family is Catholic. Apparently, James prayed the rosary during his captivity in Libya a few years ago because his mother had a strong faith, and he wanted to let her know that he was okay. As the head of the Catholic church, Pope Francis offered his condolences to James' parents during a phone conversation he had with them yesterday (Thursday, August 21st).

Apparently, many friends of the Foleys have been praying for James throughout his recent captivity, which began in 2012 (details in the following article: http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2014/08/20/james-foleys-prayers-and-the-dark-side
-of-faith/). It's too bad that the media didn't broadcast what was going on until it was too late (at least, I haven't heard anything on the news), as I'm sure that many born-again Christians throughout the world would have been praying for him, too. It might have made a big difference in the outcome.

But what is "praying the rosary"? That is a practice I do not understand. Is it a specific prayer? Or is it the thing they hold in their hands when they pray?

How To Pray The Rosary - The purpose of the Rosary is to help keep in memory certain principal events or mysteries in the history of our salvation, and to thank and praise God for them. There are twenty mysteries reflected upon in the Rosary, and these are divided into the five JOYFUL MYSTERIES, the five LUMINOUS MYSTERIES, the five SORROWFUL MYSTERIES, and the five GLORIOUS MYSTERIES. You may also wish to pray the rosary online, with others or by yourself. As suggested by the Pope St. John Paul the Great, the Joyful mysteries are said on Monday and Saturday, the Luminous on Thursday, the Sorrowful on Tuesday and Friday, and the Glorious on Wednesday and Sunday (with this exception: Sundays of Christmas season - The Joyful; Sundays of Lent - Sorrowful).

Make the Sign of the Cross and say the "Apostles' Creed."
Say the "Our Father."
Say three "Hail Marys."

Say ten "Hail Marys," while meditating on the Mystery.
