Answer Question
Should pastors tell jokes during sermons?
I've noticed that lots of pastors tell jokes while they're preaching. Apparently, they think they'll attract more people to their churches that way. Actually, I don't recall anyone in the Bible trying to make people laugh. In my opinion, jokes in the pulpit do more harm than good.
Here's what the Bible says about jokes:
-- Ephesians 5:3-4: "But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks."
More than once, I've been listening to a really good sermon when the pastor cracked an unfunny joke and destroyed the "mood." I think that more people would be saved and get right with God if the pastors would simply "preach the word" and stop trying to be funny.
